What CoolLogic™ Delivered

ESG Audit

Comprehensive review of the live white space environment to identify cooling over-provision and energy inefficiency opportunities.

CRAH Fan Optimisation

Staged reduction of CRAH fan speeds from 75% to 55% with continuous thermal monitoring, decommissioning surplus units safely.

Chilled Water Efficiency

Incremental increases to chilled water flow temperatures under controlled conditions, reducing chiller lift and compressor workload.

Continuous Monitoring

Two-week monitoring periods at each optimisation stage with ampere draw measurements to validate performance and ensure thermal compliance.

Zero Disruption Delivery

All optimisation work completed in the live customer environment with no service interruption and maintained thermal compliance throughout.

Energy Benchmarking

Comparative energy analysis across equivalent periods verifying measurable kWh reductions in both technical and mechanical consumption.

Customer Hall Optimisation

An ESG review of the customer hall identified significant cooling over-provision, presenting an opportunity to reduce energy demand while maintaining full thermal resilience.

Objectives

  • Reduce cooling-related energy consumption
  • Eliminate surplus operational capacity
  • Maintain compliant temperatures in a live environment
  • Improve efficiency without impacting service availability
Customer Hall — IT capacity allocation, cooling requirements and CRAH unit data

Customer Hall — Capacity & Cooling Overview

1,395kW IT Capacity Allocation
598kW Current IT Load Demand
8 units CRAH Units Required vs 22 Installed

The Opportunity

The audit revealed that the current IT load demand of 598kW against an IT capacity allocation of 1,395kW indicated substantial over-engineering of the cooling provision. With 22 CRAH units installed at 90kW cooling capacity each and a current cooling requirement of 690kW, only 8 CRAH units were required to meet demand.

This over-provision, while resilient, presented a significant and unnecessary energy overhead. The CoolLogic™ methodology targeted this surplus through a controlled, phased optimisation programme.

The Approach

Rather than replacing infrastructure, Pelham proposed a dual approach: reducing CRAH fan speeds in stages while decommissioning surplus units, combined with chilled water temperature adjustments — all without capital expenditure and without interrupting live operations.

Phased CRAH Fan & Chilled Water Optimisation

A controlled, data-led approach was implemented to reduce CRAH fan speeds and decommission surplus units, while continuously monitoring rack inlet temperatures to ensure full thermal compliance throughout.

Phase 1 — CRAH Fan Speed Reduction
1
Baseline Measurement Measure ampere draw with CRAH fans operating at 75% fan speed.
2
Reduce to 65% Fan speed reduced by 10% from 75% to 65%. Monitor cell temperatures for two weeks.
3
Re-measure at 65% Ampere draw measured at 65% fan speed to confirm energy reduction.
4
Reduce to 60% Fan speed reduced by 5% from 65% to 60%. Monitor cell temperatures for two weeks.
5
Re-measure at 60% Ampere draw measured at 60% fan speed.
6
Final Reduction to 55% Fan speed reduced by 5% from 60% to 55% with continued thermal monitoring for two weeks.
7
Confirm Stable Operation Final ampere draw measurement at 55%. Confirmation of stable operation and full thermal compliance.
Phase 2 — Chilled Water Efficiency

Raising the chilled water flow temperature by a managed few degrees over a fixed monitoring period resulted in significant energy savings. Higher flow temperatures reduce chiller lift and compressor workload, directly lowering electrical demand.

While external ambient temperatures influence absolute performance, comparative analysis across equivalent periods demonstrates clear efficiency improvements.
